The transfer ratio - the proportion of sensory input that reaches the cortex - drops from 0.9 during waking to just 0.4 during deep sleep. More than half of the world's stimuli are filtered out before they ever reach conscious awareness.

The Sentinel

Yet the reduction is never total. A 50-percent cut preserves enough sensory information for the brain to monitor the environment. This is sensory gaining: the brain's ability to amplify relevant sounds and suppress distractions, even in sleep.

Consider the new mother who sleeps through a lorry passing on the street yet wakes instantly at her baby's faint cry. Or the hare in an open field, undisturbed by wind but alert to the soft footfall of a fox. Issa and Wang (2011) demonstrated this at a neuronal level in primates, showing that quiet sounds barely register in the auditory cortex during sleep, while loud or emotionally significant sounds evoke responses nearly identical to waking.

A second study by Andrillon and Kouider (2020) at the Institut du Cerveau in Paris formalised this duality in the concept of the "vigilant sleeper" - a brain that never fully disconnects, maintaining a dynamic balance between sensory isolation and environmental awareness.

When the Gating Fails

The system depends on the brain's baseline level of arousal. When the mind is already overactive - from rumination, urban noise pollution, or a bedroom that leaks light and sound - the gate is harder to close. The reticular thalamic nucleus cannot reduce sensory flow effectively if the cortex is already in a state of heightened readiness.

Light and noise are the two most common intruders that the thalamic gate must contend with - and the two that are most within our control.
